Remobo Blog http://blog.remobo.com find out what's happening with Remobo... posterous.com Sat, 24 Sep 2011 22:48:00 -0700 Announcing Remobo 0.60.0 with Proxy Browsing http://blog.remobo.com/announcing-remobo-0600-with-proxy-browsing http://blog.remobo.com/announcing-remobo-0600-with-proxy-browsing

We're happy to announce the latest version of Remobo today!  We've greatly improved the service and are also introducing a brand new built-in application called "Proxy Browser".  Proxy Browser allows you to browse the web through a secure proxy server running within Remobo. This means you can browse the web through any other device on your buddy list. The connection between your current device and the device you are browsing through is completely secure.

What can you do with Proxy Browsing?

  • Browse securely through your home computer while you are on public wifi hotspots
  • Browse through the firewall at work or school and access content like Facebook and YouTube
  • Access content from other countries and regions that are otherwise locked (like Hulu, Pandora, PBS, BBC, iPlayer, iView, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC & more!)

Why use Remobo's proxy solution?

  • 100% secure browsing
  • More versatile than web based proxies
  • Connect to known endpoints
  • Create your own endpoints or connect through friends

We hope you enjoy this update and new application!

Tue, 28 Jun 2011 05:02:00 -0700 How secure is your data in the cloud? http://blog.remobo.com/how-secure-is-your-data-in-the-cloud http://blog.remobo.com/how-secure-is-your-data-in-the-cloud
Earlier last week, something bad happened at the cloud storage provider Dropbox:  for 4 hours you could log in to anyone’s Dropbox folder with any password.  This was an inadvertent operational error which happened during an update where some bugs were introduced in Dropbox’s authentication code.

“This should never have happened”, stated the Dropbox CTO on their blog, but it did happen, and security breaches like this are doomed to happen again at many of these Cloud Service Providers, as a result of either operational mistakes or malicious hacking.

This incident highlights a fundamental problem with Cloud-based service:  with its centralized architecture, Cloud-based services are vulnerable to mistakes from the Cloud Service Provider itself, as well as uninvited hacking from anyone with access to the Cloud.

It boils down to how much trust you have for your Cloud Service Provider to protect your data.  Most consumer-oriented Cloud services are trading some level of security for ease of use, by making it easy for users to log in with a single password, instead of a full set of encryption keys.  In this scenario, the Cloud Service Provider owns your security credentials, and you do not have much control over it.  All you can do is cross your fingers and give your “trust” to the Service Provider.

But even the best trusted service provider makes mistakes in their operations, and worse yet, the bigger and more trustworthy they are, the more likely they are to lure hackers looking to attack and find their vulnerabilities, just like a honeypot attracting bees.  A recent example is RSA, the well-know security firm founded by the inventors of public/private key encryption algorithms.  RSA’s widely popular SecureID product has been deployed by countless organizations as an anti-hacking mechanism to protect their security, and yet itself has been hacked back in March 2011.  The victims include Department of Defense contractor Lockheed Martin, whose virtual private networks were compromised two months later for its “defense secrets and related IP”.

So what can you do?  You probably should not put data in the cloud if you are not willing to give it away.  For sensitive private data, if you really have to put it in the cloud, you should at least encrypt the data with strong encryption, with keys owned only by you.  To manage the encryption keys yourself can be quite a hassle, and there’s the trade-off between strong security and ease-of-use: not everyone knows how to encrypt their data, and even fewer can manage their security keys easily by themselves.  It’s a difficult job to figure out how to make a consumer-focused produce/service like Remobo easy to use for every one, while keeping it secure by empowering users to have full control over their own security credentials.   And we at the Remobo team are trying hard to strike the balance between these two needs for our users.

It’s time to take control of your own security, and Remobo is here to help you.

For the latest MAX OS X versions of 10.6.5 and 10.6.6, we have observed the problem of inteference with Remobo's Virtual Interface from MobileMe/Back-to-My-MAC:

MAC OS X problem of MobileMe/Back-to-My-MAC

The Remobo team is building workaround for this problem now, and it'll be available in the next release.  Meanwhile, you can apply the 1-command workaround above to get it fixed for now.  Let us know of your feedbacks here.

UPDATE: This problem has been fixed in Remobo v0.50.6, by automatically restoring the Remobo Virtual IP address that's deleted by Back-to-My-MAC.   We still think it's an Apple's bug on MobileMe/Back-to-My-MAC, though our Remobo users don't have to worry about it, after v0.50.6.

Mon, 10 Jan 2011 05:52:00 -0800 Go PRO! Introducing Remobo v0.50 http://blog.remobo.com/go-pro-introducing-remobo-v050 http://blog.remobo.com/go-pro-introducing-remobo-v050

After a laborious 2010, the Remobo team is excited to announce the latest release of Remobo v0.50 at the beginning of the new year. This marks a significant milestone for the Remobo Service:  the PRO features has finally arrived.

Here’s the New Year Resolution list for v0.50:

PRO Features

We’ve completed re-architecture the whole Remobo program and separate it into front-end user interface and back-end service modules.  This allows Remobo to run in Unattended-Mode and support AutoStart Service.  It also means you can finally control Remobo Service via the newly debuted Command-Line Interface (CLI) for Remobo. These PRO features are handy for things like media center, file sharing server, database server, source repositories, and any type of servers that you wanna be able to connect to remotely without attentions.

Better User Experience

The #1 complains over the past versions was the user registration process.  We’ve completed redesigned the registration flow, and now you can register from either the Remobo program or web site

Notice that the Remobo Forum is now integrated with the Remobo user database, which means you can use the same Remobo UserID and password to sign on the Forum and make your post.  Because of this single-sign-on Account consolidation, we are unable to migrate the old Forum's user & their contents into the new one. Let us know if this is a problem for you.

Also, all 3 platforms are updated in this release. This has become a tradition & commitment for Remobo team to always maintain the latest versions across all 3 major platforms of Windows, Mac,and Linux, while providing the same, consistent user experiences on all of them.

Quality Improvements

There’re literally hundreds of bug fixes that go into v0.50. Kudos to the Remobo team and thanks for all of you who provides comments and bug reports  There’s also a great deal of performance enhancement under the hood.  We’re confident that Remobo offers one of the fastest VPN solutions you can find today.

New Website and Logo

A Remobo Logo contest was held earlier last year, and we are met with a lot of ensuthiastic designers over the contest.  The winner is now unveiled along with the new web site layout.  We hope you enjoy the new slick design of the logo and the website. Be sure to visit the new Forums and give us your feedbacks. Remember you now have integrated account on both the Remobo web site and the Remobo program, by using your existing Remobo UserID. You can register your Remobo Account here if you don't have one yet.

v0.50 is a big achievement for the Remobo team.  Since v0.30, we have trimmed down the integrated Apps, and focus on delivering a high quality, stable, zero-configuration VPN. We've accomplished this mission in v0.50. Going onward, we'll bring back the Integrated Apps like VNC and others. Be sure to voice out your favorite apps on Remobo through the new Forums, or to email to us at the usual address: "support (at) remobo (dot) com".

Stay tuned for more!

The latest version of Remobo is now available for Windows, MAC and Linux!  This version has a huge number of bug fixes and promises to be more stable than ever.  We have also stripped out the plugin applications as we want to focus on the core application.  You can still run apps such as VNC, Remote Desktop, file sharing and more over Remobo of course... its just not built into the menu system anymore.  We will be adding things back once the main application is rock solid again. Thanks!

The Remobo team has been very busy soliciting feedback from our great users, and we are working hard to take this project out of beta and on to the next level.   One of
the things we need to do is to give ourselves a face lift with a nice, sleek new logo. The current logo was designed by a team member and has served its purpose well; it looks
great (to me) but we think it can be even more impressive.  So this time we're turning to the pros for help, and we are holding a Logo Design Contest here:

The contest ends at end of this week, but we may extend it to get more entries.  Let us know what you think, either in the comments or email us at "logo (at) remobo (dot) com".

Looking forward to your opinions on the New Logo candidates.  Any graphic designers out there are also welcome to submit an entry!  Thanks!

Sun, 20 Dec 2009 05:43:00 -0800 Server Outage http://blog.remobo.com/server-outage-1 http://blog.remobo.com/server-outage-1

Starting around 8pm Dec. 19th, 2009 PST, we're experiencing some repeated server outage for a few hours.  The existing running client should no be affected, but the new login sessions may fail because of this server outage.   We're working on the fix of the problem now; it may take a few hours before data on the servers are fully restored.   Sorry for the inconvenience.

Update I: The server clouds are up and running well, though the data restore process is still in progress.  This means the registration and login functions for all new users should be run ok, while some existing users may still experience login failure (username/password mismatch), because the restore processes haven't recovered all of the data yet.  Hopefully the whole recovery process will be done in a few hours.   We'll keep you posted.

Update II: All user data are restored now.  This means both new & existing users should be able to login ok now, and everything should be working.  If you still encounter problems, please notify us by email to "support (at) remobo (dot) com", with your Remobo UserID and the log file, remobo.log.

Tue, 01 Dec 2009 17:11:00 -0800 Known Bug in v0.20.8 Windows version http://blog.remobo.com/known-bug-in-v0208-windows-version http://blog.remobo.com/known-bug-in-v0208-windows-version

A bug was recently discovered in v0.20.8 for Windows version that, in some cases, the Login Window is not shown long after the Remobo program is launched and the Splash screen displayed. It can take minutes to hours before the Login Window is shown on screen; during the time the Splash screen is gone and there's no Remobo window on screen, although the Remobo.exe process is still running, based on the Task Manager's Process List.

The bug is in our new event-processing logic, and it's been fixed in the next releases of Remobo, v0.21.x, which is now under tests before official release. You can either request to be a Private-Alpha tester by emailing your Forum UserID to "tester (at) remobo (dot) com", or downgrade to the previous version of v0.20.1:

Remobo v0.20.1 for Windows

Notice that this bug affects only windows version of v0.20.8.

Sorry for the problems. We'll make public release of next version soon.

[Update]: this bug is now fixed in the v0.22.0 release.

Thu, 12 Nov 2009 00:49:00 -0800 Update on User Data Recovery http://blog.remobo.com/update-on-user-data-recovery http://blog.remobo.com/update-on-user-data-recovery

In the past few days, we've been working hard trying to recover some of our Users' data that's been corrupted after the Server Outage last weekend.  Most of them are recovered by now, but there's still some that we just won't be able to recover without your password.

One of the reasons why we decide to build Remobo is to make "Network Security" a choice for everyone.  We highly value our user's Privacy, and have this philosophy of not to keep user's private data, like passwords, on our servers AT ALL. This makes it very difficult to recover some of your  Account Records like Login Credentials, which are encrypted with your own password.

All our Servers are designed with redundant backups, but in the incidents of last weekend's Server Outage, both the primary and backups were crashed with corrupted data under loads.  We'll redesign the back-end servers to make sure this won't happen again.  (I'll write more on this in later posts...)

Most of you should have no problem logging in by now.  For those of you who still cannot login with the right UserID/Password,  here what you can do:

1) Reset your password. From the Login Window of Remobo, there's a "Reset Password" link that walk you thru resetting password.   Choose the "Forgot your password" options, and fill in your UserID and Email Address used when registering your UserID.  They'll be matched against our stored records.  And an email will be sent to you for new passwords.

Notice that, after the password recovery, you may still notice that some of your buddy list is missing, which is also the casualties of last weekend's Server Outage.  Please manaully add all your buddies back.   Sorry for the inconvenience.

2) Register new Remobo Account.  We know that, in the past, there're quite a few users experiencing errors while registering private key from their Remobo client.  The latest version, v0.20.8, has addressed most of this kind of problems.  If you still encounter errors while registering new UserID, now you can aslo do it from our web page:

http://www.remobo.com/register.php

After registration from the web page above, you can login from any Remobo Client with the newly registered UserID.

Notice that,  in Remobo, you can login with single UserID from multiple machines. So, you can either create multiple new accounts and make buddies of each other, or use a single Account and login from all your machines.

We are really sorry for all the inconvenience on some of you from this user data loss.  Please let us know of any problems you may still have.  You can post it on our Forum, or write to "support (at) remobo (dot) com".

Right after the v0.20.8 release last Friday, we have had traffic surge that resulted in some server outage.  The servers have been recovered by themselves last weekend.  But since then we have some users reporting that they're unable to login with their existing username/password.

After checking the user database, it's found that the Server outage has resulted in temporary loss of some of the user's account records.  We're in the process of recovering it from the backup database. Meanwhile, if you hit this problem, please register a new Remobo account before we recover your old ones.

Recently we uncovered a bug in v0.20.1 that, during normal login, sometimes casuses the Remobo client program to generate duplicate Account Records in the database. This will cause the login session to halt on the client side.

The bug has been fixed on v0.20.8, which was released just today (for MAC & Windows now, Linux version will be out soon). If your Login windows disappears or halts after you've typed in the right username and password, then you may be hitting this bug. We're in the process of cleaning out duplicated Account Records in our database, and you can help by upgrading to v0.20.8 to avoid the chance of it re-generating duplicate Account Records. Thanks!

Hi all!  We have recently pushed out a new version of Remobo (0.20.1)  It's more of a bug fix and maintenance release but one big thing for Mac users is that it now supports OS X Tiger.  We wanted it to support PPC platforms as well but there are still some issues to work out.

Thanks for everyones continued support!  We will have even more exciting features coming soon... as well as a way for developers out there to help us make Remobo even better!
